In collaboration with the Anuario Latinoamericano – Ciencias Políticas y Relaciones Internacionales (published by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Poland), RC54 invites contributions for a dossier entitled “Latin America: Successes, Failures, and Crises of Democracy.”

The dossier commemorates the 40th anniversary of the publication of Transitions from Authoritarian Rule (O’Donnell, Schmitter, and Whitehead, 1986), while critically examining democracy’s precarious balance between successes and failures in Latin American and Caribbean states. We invite critical contributions that engage with the legacy of the “Transitions” framework while pushing beyond it. As democracies falter from Central and Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia and Africa, what can other regions learn from Latin America’s successes, failures, and enduring crises?
