The newly created RC54 officially inaugurated its activities with an online seminar addressing the political crisis unleashed in Venezuela following the US intervention in early 2026. The seminar entitled “Venezuela: Transition to an Uncertain Democracy,” was held on January 30th. Panelists examined the immediate political fallout, the humanitarian situation, and the prospects for a negotiated exit from the crisis.

In addition, RC54 members co-organized a special track to assess the state of democracy in the region for the upcoming International Political Science Congress of AMECIP (Mexican Association of Political Science), to be held on September 22–25, 2026 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The main goal of the track is to share comparative experiences in order to generate a global agenda for achieving successful transitions and strengthening democratic practices. The track will feature both theoretical contributions and empirical case studies.
